Introduction
The trend of high-tech gentrification in the San Francisco Bay Area has unfortunately hurt many longtime residents, making it challenging for them to continue living in the neighborhoods they've called home for years. The escalating real estate prices brought on by gentrification have left many people feeling helpless and forced to leave their communities. It's a deplorable situation, and there's growing concern about addressing this issue and supporting those affected.
It has been observed that many people who have been living in their homes for a long time are hesitant to refinance their homes to access the equity that has accumulated over the years. This is mainly because they fear the new mortgage payment would be too high to afford if they refinance. As a result, they feel stuck in their homes and need help to take advantage of the equity available to them, which is the whole purpose of a house: to use it as a bank account in times of need.
As a seasoned tech industry worker, I am deeply troubled by the detrimental effects of gentrification. The relentless pace and constant pressure to stay ahead of the technological curve have corrupted the original ethos of working collaboratively toward improving society through innovation. Instead, it has devolved into a fiercely competitive and ruthless environment where individual success is prioritized above collective progress. It has become a competitive and cutthroat environment where everyone is focused on personal success rather than collaborating for the greater good.
Collaboration can be a powerful tool in addressing complex problems. With that in mind, let us join forces to identify and implement solutions that can help make a positive difference in the lives of those who need it most. TOXIC WASTE: Leaving the San Francisco Bay Area
Living in the San Francisco Bay Area has become a rat race, thanks to the never-ending pursuit of technological advancements. The competition to succeed has become dog-eat-dog, all moving at a competitive fast pace. "Which made me want to get the Fuck out of there as soon as possible!"
Looking ahead, I realized it was time to leave the Bay Area. The recent changes have left me feeling cold and disconnected. I realized that I was caught up in the never-ending rat race of life and that if I didn't take action soon, it could seriously affect my mental well-being. It was like I was a ticking time bomb, and if I didn't make a move, I was in danger of becoming part of the toxic waste. That was the turning point when I decided to leave the Bay Area and pursue my passion for the arts and literature. I found a new home in the vibrant Honolulu Arts District with a firm determination to discover the true essence of life. I then understood that finding my Aloha - the Hawaiian way of life that promotes love, peace, and compassion - was crucial. Given the consequences, I was ready to let karma take its course accordingly.
Searching for Aloha
The feeling of being lost and disconnected from oneself can be overwhelming. Have you ever felt this way? Sometimes, we try to fit in by pretending to be someone we're not. However, we may eventually realize we're on the wrong path. This realization can be an awakening experience. I can relate to this feeling because I once lived a life that seemed perfect but ended up being a nightmare. I lost everything and had to start over, only to be in the same situation again. This left me with feelings of despair. However, I knew I couldn't continue on that path or risk losing my sanity. So, I made the choice to find a different way forward.
It's essential to have a sense of belonging and connect with like-minded people with similar beliefs and values. For those in the artistic community, finding a tribe of fellow artists can be especially beneficial. Exploring and discovering the true meaning of Aloha can provide valuable insights into maintaining mental well-being and can be a helpful journey to embark on.
Coming to Hawai'i to become KAMA ' AINA
I came to Hawaii to live and learn Aloha and found a culture in despair. Teaching love to those who have forsaken them as a sovereign, independent nation. The spirit of the people could not be broken. The spiritual energy of Aloha is too powerful to overcome, and I have come to love and respect the Native Hawaiian culture for all they have shared with the world.
I am torn as a veteran who loves his country but is also ashamed of what my country has done to the Hawaiian people. A culture that has shown me the meaning of Aloha. A beautiful culture that has shown the world how to love by living with the spirit of Aloha every day. I hope someday to be worthy of even being considered a Kama'aina (people of the land).
The Sting of Imperialism
Imagine these new strange people came to your house for a visit and never left, then helped themselves to everything your home has to offer. You're in a thriving culture, and you welcomed them into your community. You share your hospitality, and your curiosity rises as they bring fine gifts from lands you have never heard of. You're overwhelmed and want to learn more.
But there's a hidden agenda. The real motive is to teach their ways and convert your way of life into theirs. As time passes, you hear their stories and adopt their culture and religion. Now you're easily manipulated into their authority of what is right and wrong. They try to suppress your language, rituals, and way of life.
Then you try to live like them and learn the world’s ways. You adapt to their politics, understanding that you're in a country of your own; it was even recognized and declared to the rest of the world. All of a sudden, things changed in the name of progress. Your reigning monarchy is under arrest, and your people are in disarray. You try to fight back to no avail against a superior military force. In despair, you relinquish your authority.
You now know and feel the sting of imperialism, and your generations will live in suppression. You are forced to live by their rules to survive.
But you have one weapon, the spirit of Aloha that will prevail.
To be Bohemian
As individuals reach their senior years, they may question the financial wisdom of owning property. The cost of mortgage payments, insurance, and property taxes can consume a significant portion of their monthly income, leaving little room for other expenses. This could lead to becoming "house-poor" and feeling like a slave to one's mortgage lender. It is essential to consider the long-term financial implications of homeownership, especially as income may decrease in retirement.
I'd rather live a simple life. As you reach the age of 62 or older, it's essential to focus on your passions and leave behind a legacy that will be remembered for generations to come. One way to achieve this is by embracing a simple and bohemian lifestyle.
Consider this question: how do you want to be remembered when you leave this planet? Do you have something to say about yourself so that others can know and understand what you are all about? Or are you satisfied just saying, "I was here, I saw, that's all, goodbye"? I always remind myself of my goal to achieve a place on the Wikipedia pages.

This kind of liberation enables the creative flow without fear of criticism or persecution. The ability to express oneself freely without hesitation is essential for success in this field.

During a Lyft ride, I had a chance to learn about the Chinatown-Honolulu Arts District, an area that I was unfamiliar with. The driver, an avid photographer inspired by Kim Taylor Reese, shared an interesting story about an art movement that aimed to beautify the neighborhood. Kim Taylor Reese invited artists from across the globe to Honolulu to paint murals on building walls. The artists would have to come at their own expense or with corporate sponsorships. Still, their efforts resulted in stunning art murals throughout Kaka'ako, downtown Honolulu, and Chinatown. The experience was enlightening and inspired me to join the arts district community, one of Hawaii's hippest places.

The Honolulu Arts District is known for its Bohemian vibe, and a moped is one of the iconic modes of transportation around town. It is a cheap, easy to park, and economical way to get around the city and Waikiki. However, moped thefts are common on the island, so getting a heavy-duty lock and chain to secure your moped is essential. You can lock your moped in bike racks only if they are not reserved for bikes. The city provides many racks around town on the sidewalks.
Although no helmet law exists, wearing helmets while riding a moped is highly encouraged. Carrying one around is a good idea, but make sure you can lock it up with the bike or moped. You can use the bike lane with your moped, but be careful, as auto drivers may not see you when turning and cutting you off. It is recommended to wear a helmet to avoid any accidents.
It is important to note that you cannot use the main highways with a moped. Therefore, having a car to go out of town is a good idea. However, if you live within the Honolulu city limits, it is highly recommended to get a moped as it is a convenient and cost-effective way to get around the city.
